AUDI Quatto Cup qualifying came to Southbroom Golf Club last Saturday, and there was a certain buzz out on the course, thanks to the live scoring.
In the end, there was a clear winner, despite others making a run for it at times.
Joe Carolan, who birdied the 14th for a five-pointer, and Cleve Walker, who parred the stroke one 3rd hole and birdied the 9th for four-pointers, carded an untouchable 52 points to win by five from George Hayne and Don Osbourn.
Audi Centre Margate dealer principal Johan Kinsey-Ahlers was pleased to be able to bring the tournament to Southbroom.
“There was a format change and we were able to extend it a lot more. It was great to see a full field,” he said.
Brad Forge of Corporate Golf Solutions said the winners would now join nine other pairs at Zimbali in the national final.
“They will have a one in 10 chance of going to Spain for the international final, where they will play against 52 other countries,” he said.
He also extended thanks to Johan for using golf to engage his local community.
Southbroom pro Derek James said it had been a fantastic event, and had a feeling that Joe and Cleve had a great chance of qualifying for the international final.
In third spot on 46 points were Shaun Koen and Frik van Zyl, followed on 45 points by Candida Amm and Mari Fielden, as well as Paul Cole and George Haswell.
Mari had an opening nine of 36, quite sensational, but could not keep it going.
In sixth place were Malcolm Greenland and Colin McKay on 44 points.
Meanwhile, Sandy Luus won the women’s comp last Wednesday on 32 points, two ahead of Janet Humphrey.
Tony Westoby took the men’s comp on 39 points, counting out Olliver Ransome.
Looking ahead, Southbroom will host the Par 3 Contest this Sunday, August 14 from 1.30pm onward.
