From the bowling greens: Lions treat blind bowlers
It's been an annual fixture for the past 35 years.
PORT Shepstone Lions once again hosted the National Association of Blind Bowlers tournament at Riverside in Uvongo last weekend.
A number of blind bowlers travelled to the South Coast from various parts of the country to take part.
Port Shepstone Lions have been involved with the NABB (KZN) since 1981.
The annual weekend tournament means a great deal to the blind bowlers and for the past 35 years the Port Shepstone Lions have organised the competition and secured sponsorship for travel, meals, prizes and accommodation.
Apart from the games, the weekend included accommodation and meals.
Hibiscus Rotary Anns provided the Saturday lunch, and the Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies provided and served dinner on the Saturday evening.
After the dinner, visitors were entertained by talented musician Derek Jackson.
Port Shepstone Lions are most grateful to event organiser Madeleine Gouws who organised the event, as well as several sponsorships.
The Lions would thanked Riverside for the superb venue and wonderful hospitality and is also indebted to main sponsor, National Braiding Industries, as well as all other sponsors who made generous donations towards this very successful annual project.
KINGFISHER BOWLING ASSOCIATION
Eddie and Dora are champions for 2016
BRILLIANT bowls and good weather made for a great weekend for the Champion of Champions held at AMBC last weekend.
The eventual men’s champion was Eddie Fann from Port Shepstone and the women’s champion was Dora Vosloo from Margate CC, who both played excellent games throughout.
Men’s runner-up was Barry Payn from Port Edward with Umtentweni’s Peter Clark and Martiens Zietsman from Munster who came third and fourth respectively.
The women’s runner-up was Leoni Booth from Port Edward, third place went to Pam Cole-Cook and fourth to Alida Munnik from Hibberdene.
The executive would like to thank AMBC for hosting the tournament and for providing great greens, good food and refreshments and a friendly atmosphere.
Special thanks to the markers and umpires who are always so willing to help.
BANNERS REST
NEXT sponsored competitions are the Port Edward Tops men’s pairs this Sunday (11th), and the Indulgence Beauty Salon and Peter Bennett open pairs next Tuesday (13th).
Please note that the prize-giving for the LSC 2-4-2 will be at Port Edward bowling club this Friday (9th) at 12.30pm.
HIBBERDENE
THE nominated mixed trips played last Friday was changed to drawn pairs. The overall winners were Hana Svoboda and Frances Raywood.
Second prize went to Danie Human and Bubbles Bezuidenhout. Session was won by Roger Burwood and Pauline Howle.
There was a lucky draw with the extra vouchers that was won by others than the above mentioned winners.

The nominated mixed trips will be played tomorrow (9th) followed by prize-giving. Please bring a plate of eats.

MARGATE BC
CONGRATS to Pam Cole-Cook on winning the bronze medal in the KBA Champion of Champions played last weekend.
Winners of the Halfway Toyota men’s 2-4-2 last Friday were Gary Hess and Dereck Schorn. Runners-up were Lance Marshall and Roy Deakins.

MARGATE CC
WINNERS of the Hair Shoppe women’s fours of the Ladder Competition played over 10 months were Port Edward’s Estelle Carter, Mary Warner, (Yvonne van Mentz MCC), Marianne van Buuren and Leonie Booth.
Runners-up were Port Shepstone’s Jenny Rawlins, Caroline Harris, Sharon Bischoff and Anne Payne.
The on-the-day winners were Yvonne van Mentz, Barbara Gradwell, Gae Gravell and Jean Marnewick.
Runners-up were Lenie Geyer, Ann Gibson, Sharon Scheinberg and Leza Edwards.
The club is immensely proud of Dora Vosloo who won gold at the KBA Champion of Champions.
Greens will be closed from September 12 to October 4 for maintenance.

WARWICK day winners last week were Hedley Meek, Eileen van der Lith and Anthony Card.

WELL done to Marianne, Leoni, Mary and Estelle on winning the Margate CC Hair Shoppe women’s fours Ladder Competition.
Jens Andersen won the novice singles from Mike Gower. He also won the men’s handicap singles from Grant Walton.

RIVERSIDE
THE club hosted the annual Port Shepstone Lions blind bowlers competition last weekend, and won the overall competition.
The Hopdens Spar open pairs is this Saturday (10th) at 1.15pm for 1.30pm. Tabs in on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 1.15pm for 1.30pm.
SOUTHBROOM
CONGRATULATIONS to Hein Bester, Nico Mantoan, Alfred Shusha and Elize Bester on winning the Mariners open fours last week.

APOLOGIES for the incorrect insert by your scribe in last week’s news where Dumisani Madlala was congratulated for representing the club in the Champion of Champions.
The club’s men’s singles champion is Peter Clark. The scribe regrets any inconvenience or embarrassment caused by this error.
Unfortunately, neither Tammy Gibbons nor Peter got very far. Tammy was beaten in the second round and Peter in the third.
Nevertheless the club is proud of them and wish them better luck for the next time.
Next event is the South Coast Herald men’s pairs today (8th) in the morning, followed by the Schooners Restaurant mixed trips on Monday (12th), also in the morning.
It’s summer mode now, with tabs in at 2pm and play at 2.15pm.
SOUTHPORT
TOM Semple and Cosmos Gumede won the Fruit & Veg in-house pairs last week.
Don Russouw and Shirley de Bruin were second with Jenny Floquet and Ian Gordon third.
Mike King and Kitty Cochman won the second session prize.
The women’s trips Interclub between Southport, Umtentweni, The Bell and Hibberdene is being played at Southport all day today (8th).
The men’s fours between the same four clubs is due to be fought out next Thursday.
VILLAGE
A GREAT effort from Gary Hess for doing so well in the Champion of Champions, going out to Eddie Fann who was the overall winner.
Congratulations to Eddie, and Dora Vosloo, who won the women’s section.
The next Hyundai Tabs in drawn mixed trips will be held on Saturday, September 17.
Next sponsored competitions are Martin Electronics men’s 2-4-2 next Thursday (15th), followed by Hopden’s Kwikspar mixed 2-4-2 on Tuesday, September 27.
The Food Lover’s Market tabs in drawn mixed trips was won by Hans Hugo, Marie Momple and Mike Ryan followed by Alan Tyers, Rosalie Bloom and Cathy Hall.
