Resurfaced court officially opened
The third court was constructed in the late eighties.
SOUTHBROOM Tennis Club celebrated the grand opening of court three after its recent resurfacing.
Chairman of the club, Luise Mohr, said that courts one and two were built in 1973.
“Then in the late eighties, the tennis club had become so popular, with a large contingent of members, that a decision was made to have a third court constructed.
“However, it only turned out much later that the location of court three was regrettably a bad decision due to the little river that runs past it. This river has caused the court to flood on numerous occasions,” said Ms Mohr.
She explained that three years ago when the Southbroom Golf Club was awarded the Ladies Open Golf Tournament, the club contacted members of Southbroom Tennis Club to inquire if the tennis clubhouse could be used to accommodate several television crews that were reporting on the tournament.
“We agreed and so we had to spruce up the toilets, kitchen, build a new patio, replace parts of the fallen fences around the tennis courts and resurface court three with the R50 000 that was given to the tennis club by the Southbroom Ratepayers’ Association.
“Today we stand proud to introduce to you the finished product of court three. Our tennis club is firmly established as a tourist attraction alongside our popular beaches, nature reserves, golf clubs, bowling clubs, restaurants and B & Bs and in our little village.”
