Volleyball ‘Legends’ falter in semi-finals
The Sheppie Legends volleyball team played in the Sezela Heritage Day tournament.
DESPITE making an impressive unbeaten run in the round robin stages by easily disposing of every team in its path, Sheppie’s touring volleyball legends eventually faltered in the semi-finals of the Sezela Heritage Day Fun Day Volleyball Tournament held last Saturday at the Sezela Oval.
Some of the Sheppie Legends were unable to resist the joyous heritage festivities on hand by partaking of some much-needed ‘spiritual’ refreshments, as they ran out of steam in their semi-final knockout clash against an all-towering Umkomaas team, whose colossal blocks shut them out of the game.
The Sheppie lads made an impressive start in their semis by taking a commanding 12-8 lead, but lost a series of points by not adapting their frontline game against a team that took full advantage by using the three man block to good effect.
Nevertheless, the local ”lads’, almost all over the age of 40, can be proud of their efforts against much younger opposition who regularly play at league level.
With the Sheppie women, represented by the Steve Munian team captained by former Natal cap, Devi Govender, it was a highly controversial affair. Despite defeating the home side, Sezela women, in the round robin stages, they eventually lost in the finals to the same team, as the home team were fast-tracked to the finals in an effort to satisfy the locals who came to see their own favourites in action.
Unlike other teams, which had senior players, the Sheppie team, had two primary school players, Uvashna Reddiar and Tiara Govender, who played superbly under the circumstances.
