Bikers honour Burry at Lake Eland MTB
Many mountain bikers braved cold weather to honour Burry Stander.
ABOUT 400 mountain bikers braved the cold, wet and windy weather and took part in the Lake Eland Quattro Classic last Sunday. The ride, powered by The Burry Stander Foundation, paid tribute to the late Olympic hero at the scenic Lake Eland. According to Burry’s mum, Mandie, by Friday they had received over 300 entries. She had heard that accommodation in and around Lake Eland was booked, even as far away as Hibberdene.
This year the foundation had a team from Quattro, a multi-faceted financial service group, based in Durban who were the main sponsors. By Sunday organisers had about 400 riders. The first 25km rider finished in 1 hour 11 minutes and the first 45km rider in at 1.53.
Speaking to various riders, Mandie Stander said it was a beautiful venue, loads of single track, bridges, technical spots and animals. Many have said it was spectacular to ride next to the gorge. Overall winners in the men’s went to Alan Hatherly (1st), Andrew Warr (2nd) and Sean Merredew taking third place.
In the women’s division Jeannie Bomford took first place with Hayley Smith in second and Candice Parker-Dennison in third. The organisers would like to thank all sponsors and bikers for making the event a success.
