South Coast dancers impress on national stage
Hopefully it will be the start of more events of this nature being held in the region.
THERE has been great excitement in the freestyle dance world of late.
In Motion Dance Academy recently hosted the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial and National Festival and Dance Championships on the coast.
Talita Helberg of In Motion Dance Academy recently took over from Beryl Cilliers as chairman of the freestyle branch in the province.
Together with Hymne du Toit from Dance Fitness in Durban, they put together the first provincial and national championships in many years.
More than 150 dancers from all over the country competed in the three day competition.
Of those, more than 80 were from the South Coast.
It gave local dancers (who don’t normally have the means to travel for these premier events) the opportunity to take part.
They competed in hip hop, freestyle, slow-dance, rock ‘n’ roll, and hustle.
The locals more than held their own against some of the country’s top dancers, showing that KZN has what it takes to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the country.
For many of them it was their first competition, yet they danced with confidence.
A number of awards were picked up along the way – and some will now have the chance to compete in the South African Championships in Pretoria on December 3.
Locally, Talita teaches freestyle, hip hop, rock ‘n roll, slow-dance and hustle.
She is registered with the SADTA and teaches in Port Shepstone and Margate.
