HOW many holes-in-one have you had? Jean Corfe, aged 82, has had seven, with the latest coming at Southbroom Golf Club recently.
She is the grandmother of one of the country’s top swimmers, Melissa Corfe, so one can see where the sporting genes come from.
Jean’s seventh ace came on the 14th hole where she used a driver to record what cannot really be described as a ‘perfect fluke’.
It’s the fourth time she has aced this particular hole!
“It was into the wind,” she said, explaining the use of the biggest club in the bag, almost apologising.
She has also had a hole-in-one on the 4th, and two when she used to live in Zululand.
Jean is currently playing off a 26 handicap, but was a champion golfer when at Howick many years ago.
Southbroom’s pro Derek James has had 10 in his career, but not four on one hole.
In other news, Matthew brothers Derrik (captain) and Bruce beat Gavin Sole (club champ) and Gary Purtell (vice-captain) in a closely fought final of the Bert Brown Knockout.
The brothers turned two down after nine, but then won holes 11 to 15.
Sole and Purtell fought back with birdies on 16 and 17 and lipped out for eagle on 18 to push it into extra time.
Jean Corfe won the women’s comp last Wednesday on 41 points, by two from Rene Matthew. Mary Carolan was third on 38 points.
Joe Carolan won the men’s comp on 48 points, followed by George Haswell on 45 points.
Tied for third on 42 points were Derrik Matthew and Kerry Fielden.
The Pharaohs Construction Business Day last Friday was won by Russell Mackenzie, Colin Mckay, Gary Purtell and Malcolm Greenland.
Runners-up were Rodney Lowe, James Fergus, Allan Steed and Jan Kleinhans, followed by John Neaves, Norman Farrell, Don Osbourn and Garth Strong.
Saturday’s women’s alliance saw Geraldine Treherne, Lizzie Currie, Augi D’Ewes and Julie Walker clean up on 89 points.
Next were Lee Mutch, Sharon Turnbull-Jackson, Della Kempthorne and Heleen Hissey on 88 points.
In the men’s section, the victors on 96 points were Roger Hissey, Tony Holness, Malcolm Moorley and Brian Brasher.
Runners-up were Gerald Fitzgerald, Paul Cole, Wally Robinson and Phil Verwey on 94 points.
The Par Three Contest saw sharp-shooter Nic van Deventer dominate with 24 points, four ahead of Urs Diethelm.
