SOS call can’t hold back fishing Freeman
Winning a fishing competition was 'all in day's work' for the man who bagged the heaviest bass.
THE South Coast Bass association hosted the fifth annual Port Edward Bass Classic last weekend.
Anglers came from as far afield as Pietermaritzburg and various accommodation venues received bookings from competitors.
The weather was wonderful, beautiful and sunny.
The main sponsor from Legend Kayaks brought 10 kayaks along for the anglers to use and the juniors thoroughly enjoyed that.
Fishing was really tough due to dirty water from recent rainfall.
Some dams produced no fish while others produced fantastically.
Farmers went out of their way to clear the dams of vegetation to enhance the fishing experience for anglers.
The biggest bass of the tournament was landed by Garreth Freeman and was 1.81kg.
Garreth was called away by his work on an emergency to Mt Frere in the middle of the competition.
He rushed there and still made it back in time to win the tournament, claiming the three-man Legend kayak.
Men’s biggest bass was caught by Ian Logie; he won a Legend kayak.
Women’s biggest bass was caught by Britney de Bruyn, collecting fishing tackle and vouchers.
Biggest bass under 18 was caught by Joshua Fisher, he won a Ferral kickboat.
Biggest bass under 12 was caught by LJ Mitchley the main sponsor’s son.
He won a Pisces Predator kickboat. Every junior angler received a packet of lures sponsored by Outdoor 365.
“We wish to thank the Kinderstrand resort for a wonderful venue, as well as to all the anglers for their support,” said Manus Erasmus, competition organiser.
* In other fishing news there seems to be very little action, with only reports of small shad and the odd bronze bream coming out.
Shad season re-opened on December 1.
With all the shad around, it is vital that fishermen respect the law as anglers to allow the shad a break during the closed season, or else one day there will be none left.
Not many reports have filtered through but the bronze bream are feeding freely as the water conditions are almost perfect for them.
A few grey and hammerhead sharks have been taken at the famous Splash Rock.
Similar results are being experienced at Uvongo and Orange Rocks.
It’s that time of the year for bass. Head out to your favourite dams, early mornings and late afternoon.
