DEBRAH Thomas of Umtentweni took advantage of the absence of some top riders to win the women’s race at the STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure at Summerveld Estate in Shongweni last Sunday.
The weather was perfect for racing and the spectacular setting and wonderful views simply added to the sense of occasion. There was a record field and the competition was red-hot.
Debrah finished the women’s MTB race, over 40km, in a time of 2:09:49. She won by nearly five minutes from Linda Maphanga, who was chased home by Linda Potts.
In the men’s race Andrew Hill dominated affairs, winning in 1:37:03 from Mboneni Ngcobo, two-and-a-half minutes behind.
Jeremy Thomson (who played centre for Natal in that famous Currie Cup win at Loftus Versveld in 1990) was third in a time of 1:43:32.
Debrah wasn’t the only South Coaster who placed on the day.
In the 20km race, Nic de Bruin of Umtentweni secured third place, behind Nkululeko Pewa and Mntomuhle Mgeyane. Nic finished in a time of 1:10:44.
