HOLIDAY season can be fun and occasionally a celebrity or two will come for a game of golf.
At Southbroom Golf Club this week, Burger Geldenhuys, a former rugby Bok who played seven tests, was in town with his son Adrian.
He’s a fairly regular visitor to Southbroom and often fine-tunes his game under the careful watch of teaching professional Derek James, recently ranked number one teaching pro in the country by Golf Digest.
In case you have not been following rugby since the 1980s, Geldenhuys gained notoriety back in 1986 when the New Zealand Cavaliers visited South Africa on what was a rebel tour.
The New Zealanders were fair game and the warm-up match against the Blue Bulls was, as expected, very physical.
Geldenhuys landed a punch on the Cavaliers’ skipper Andy Dalton, breaking his jaw and ruling him out of the series.
The story goes that, as punishment, Geldenhuys was not selected for any of the four tests played against New Zealand, although this was denied by the then selectors.
The Boks, captained by Naas Botha, would go on to win the series 3-1.
But getting back to golf, the alliance last Wednesday was won by Jeanette Peyios, Sandy Luus, Mary Carolan and Karen Asbock on 87 points.
Two behind were Irene Schanda, Shelley Myers, Lorraine Cook and Candida Amm on 85 points.
The men’s section was won on 94 points by Colin McKay, Gary Purtell, Malcolm Greenland and Peter Leeming.
They counted out Roger Hissey, Lance Marshall, John Lloyd and Roy Deakins, as well as Urs Diethelm, Pieter Joubert, John Lison and ‘Casper’.
It rained on Saturday, which saw the women call off their comp.
Some of the men battled on, with Dawie Rynners winning on 36 points, followed by John Fox on 35 points and Cleve Walker on 34 points.
