Golden times for Ugu karateka at Salga Games

IN a week dominated by water woes for Ugu, some may not have noticed that the region hosted the 2016 South African Local Government Association (Salga) Games, and did a pretty good job of it all things being considered.

Close to 2500 athletes of various shapes and sizes, competing in a variety of disciplines, made the most of the opportunities they got.

For the hosts, the highlight was the performance of the karate team, which won the gold medal.

There was a silver for Ugu in the women’s football and bronze medals in men’s golf and volleyball.

Further, Ugu managed to climb two places from last year, ending in the top five overall, which wasn’t too bad.

The Games were held at various venues in the district, with the majority taking place at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre, Uvongo Town Hall and Marburg Sports Complex, to name a few.

High profile guests at the official opening last Thursday included mayors from the various districts, as well as the MEC for Sports and Recreation, Bongi Moloi Sithole, and numerous councillors.

The Games were organised by the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, in partnership with Salga KwaZulu-Natal.

Ethekwini won gold in athletics, basketball, cricket, indigenous games, rugby, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

Ugungundlovu won gold in dance, netball and rugby (men).

Harry Gwala picked up gold in football and netball.

Umzinyathi won gold in boxing, Uthukela, football (men), while Umkhanyakude took gold in women’s volleyball.
