Bob (87) still pumps iron

Regular exercise in a gym can allow you to retain your youthful power.

THEY are rare, to be sure, but there are 80-year-old guys out there who can still put Samson to shame. Shelly Beach’s Bob White (87) must surely rank as one of the most legendary.

He still lifts weights as if they are as light as pillows and one wonders: “How is this possible?”

Bob started working out in the gym in Johannesburg at the age of 24. Today, his muscular physique and strength he has achieved is awe-inspiring as he continues to work out at Body Harmony gym in Shelly Beach.

Bob said that in his opinion, age did not dictate how you should train, or what exercises you should or shouldn’t do.

“Choosing the appropriate training programme is based on your body condition, not your age. If condition and strength are the same, the workout of a 60-year-old and a 25-year-old can be exactly the same,” explained Bob. “I’m doing so good,” he said, “and the gym is the best part. I’m not only more active, I am sharper mentally as well.”

Bob works out at the gym three times a week for about two hours. “We often expect men to wither before their time, thinking that at 80 all your manly days are behind you. This is wrong. Regular exercise, especially in a gym, can allow you to perform feats of strength. So think of this before you underestimate exercising… just because you feel ‘too old’!”
