Gary’s double no fluke at Margate CC

There's been a lot of golf at Margate Country Club this week.

ROUND five of the Carreira-Curlewis Cup at Margate Country Club saw Gary Smith rack up 41 points, winning first prize of R1350.

Runner-up was none other than Louie Carreira himself, carding 39 points to count out John Webster and win R500.

Nearest the pins were John Ford (4th) and Shannon Gottlieb (16th).

Friday’s business day was won by Koko Zithumane, Godfrey Zithumane, PK Mkhoma and Emmanual Godongwane on 102 points.

Runners-up were Frik van Zyl, Dries Barkhuizen, Stan and Johan Erasmus on 101 points.

In third place were Robert Mavundla, Wonderboy Nxumalo, Vusi Maphumulo and Mot Moleele on 100 points.

Nearest the pins were Jan Roos (4th) and Mot Moleele (16th).

Longest day, sponsored by Green Valley Golf Range, went to Rolf and Agnes Speilmann, Jim Smith and Chuck Pengilly.

Saturday’s monthly mug, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Villages, was won by Patrick Mavundla on nett 69.

Runner-up was Robin Shuttleworth on nett 71.

B division honours went to Neil Townsend on nett 67, one ahead of Mike Bond on nett 68.

John Crewe took first place in the C division on nett 69, counting out Hans van der Walt.

Nearest the pins were John Crewe (2nd) and Greg Litkie (11th).

Gary Smith had a hole-in-one on the 16th. It was his first ever, and entitles Gary to a case of whisky each month for a year, sponsored by Bells.

As Gary is a non-drinker someone suggested he send it to Anfield to help Liverpool FC drown its current woes.

Wobblers’ alliance last Wednesday saw Richard Plaskitt, Alex Botha and Otto Mutschler win on 86 points, counting out Jimmy Smith, Chuck Pengilley and Peter Rogers.

In third place were John Gibson, Freddie Boshoff and Jan Richter on 82 points.

The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Rolf Speilmann, Anton Brenn and Carl Zurfluh on 70 points.

Margaret Taylor won the women’s KZN LGU medal on nett 67.

One behind was Lesley Erasmus on nett 68, followed by Una McLachlan on nett 70.

The previous Tuesday’s comp saw Wondra Bothma take the laurels on 41 points, five clear of Freidl Kotzbauer and Alicia Hilt, who both had 36 points.
