Southern KZN seek to defend golf title
Some wet weather is predicted which could make things very interesting indeed.
IT’S almost time for the annual KwaZulu-Natal Country Districts Interzone golf tournament, which will be played at San Lameer Country Club from this Friday to Sunday.
Southern KwaZulu-Natal won it at Port Shepstone CC last year and would very much like to defend that title.
Usually the tournament is played at a different sub-union each year but as the South African Country Districts tournament will be held at San Lameer in May, it made sense to make use of this scenic venue beforehand.
There are some new faces in the Southern KZN team this year.
Back in again from last year are captain Gavin Sole (Southbroom), Graham Fabricius (Port Shepstone), who won the strokeplay event last year, and Robert Mavundla (Margate).
Making his Interzone debut for Southern KZN is veteran Sean Baker (Kokstad and Margate) who has been ‘poached’ from East Griqualand, although to be fair he has played league for Southern KZN for about eight years.

Newcomers include Jason Gilliver (Selborne), Matthew Sutherland (Selborne), Francois Botha (Southbroom) and Warren van Heerden (Umdoni Park).
Van Heerden played in the B team last year, so has some knowledge of how the tournament works.
Day 1 is 36 holes strokeplay. This will undoubtedly result in some massive scores, so anyone who can get it around in under 80 for both rounds will have done well.
And that’s if the wind doesn’t blow!
Day 2 is singles matchplay in the morning and again in the afternoon. Day 3 is singles in the morning followed by prize-giving.
The B team will be captained by the evergreen Gary Purtell of Southbroom.
Others include Dean Goldhill (Port Shepstone), Mikhail van Brakel (Umdoni Park), Jarrod van Wyk (Port Shepstone), Elvis Khawula (Margate), Douglas Sima (Margate), Derick Zolyomi (Southbroom) and Jan Roos (Southbroom).
Dean, Elvis, Douglas and Derick are all back from last year. Jarrod last played in 2013, while Mikhail and Jan are on debut.
Unfortunately Zululand has withdrawn, due to lack of available players who can either walk the 90 holes required, or pay.

Southern KZN’s biggest threats will come from Ilembe (formerly North Coast) and Northern KZN.
East Griqualand and Midlands traditionally battle it out for the wooden spoon.
