She’s a natural: Ugu Athletics Club’s rising star Ruvashnie just loves to run
The teenager has been running seriously for less than a year and has already won a big race.
RUVASHNIE Rickilal (16) is one of the Ugu Athletics Club’s newer members, having joined in January this year.
And she has already won a race, taking first place in the junior category at the Gaterite Half Marathon in Verulam last Sunday.
The running bug first took a little nibble when she took part in the Hope Park run/walk in April last year. And it never let go.
Ruvashnie, who attends Marburg Secondary, continued to do Hope Park runs and also took part in other fun runs organised by the club.
When her fitness reached a certain stage, she officially joined the club.
Ruvashnie then took part in regular, weekly time trials on Wednesdays from RA Engar Primary School at 5.30pm over a distance of 4km and 8km.
She soon became one of the regulars when club training runs were organised.

Ruvashnie’s first major race was the Umgeni Water Marathon where she ran the 15km in a time of 02:10:08, finishing second in the junior category.
She attempted the 21km run in the Verulam Gaterite Marathon and successfully completed it in a time of 02:48, winning the junior race.
“The club is extremely proud of her achievements and hopes other athletes will soon follow this inspiring example of success,” said one of the club’s founder members, Raj Naganna.
“Ugu Athletics Club is committed to promote running/walking in the community to achieve healthy living,” he added.
