‘Pardon me, but we had a lot of fun at the Human Rights race, thanks!’

About 250 walkers and runners took part in the club's fun run/walk.

UGU Athletics Club hosted a successful fun run/walk on Human Rights Day, last Tuesday, at Jai Hind Primary. Runners took part in 3km, 5km and 12km events.

Chairman of the club, Pardon Mathebula, said the event was well supported by all and, as it was a public holiday, he was surprised by the turnout.

Off they go: About 250 runners and walkers took part in the event.

“About 250 people took part and it was enjoyed by all, young and old,” he said.

He said the club was growing stronger and had attracted over 100 members since its inception last December.

The club’s goal is to create a community for all who enjoy running and who want to meet new people.

“We were proud to see all races, and both young and old taking part in this fun event,” said Mr Mathebula.

First man in the 5km was Mpilwenhle Cele in 25 min 51 seconds and the first woman was Debbie Balsdon in 37 minutes.

Loving it: Pupils from St Martin de Porres all set for the run. They are (from left) Sipho Ngleka, Mbuso Khwela, Amahle Langwe, Lungiswa Maphumalo and Mhlonipheni Dlamini.

Runners will be gearing up for the Comrades Marathon, an up-run, on Sunday, June 4. The race starts at the Durban City Hall and ends 12 hours later at the Scottsville Race Course in Pietermaritzburg.
