WATCH: Boxing ‘War on the Shore’ is back at the Wild Coast

WILD Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort was the battleground for the first in the newly launched Pan-African boxing series, ‘Friday Fight Nights’ last Friday.

The showdown saw fighters from 10 African countries compete in 10 action-packed bouts for African Boxing Union (ABU) titles.

The event, made possible by Africa’s newest Pay-Tv broadcaster Kwesé TV and Kalakoda Promotions, was a true showcase of African boxing talent and provided a fresh opportunity to reposition the sweet science of boxing across the continent.

Angolan fighter Cristiano Ndombassy took on Anelisa Qungisa from South Africa over 10 rounds for the vacant ABU super welterweight championship title. Christiano proved victorious, beating Anelisa after a tough few rounds.

The second title fight featured current South African number one heavyweight Ruann ‘The Giant King’ Visser clashing with Tanzanian Ashraf Suleiman for the ABU heavyweight title.

This was a true test of youth versus experience. Ruann boasts the longest reach currently in world boxing as documented by Box Rec and stands at a towering six foot ten inches, with a fighting weight of 125kgs.

He was the proud winner of the ABU South African heavyweight championship title.

Other notable fights were former MMA superstar Likola ‘Knife’ Liboka Didier from the DRC who faced off with Falay Kubeya of Uganda in a non-title heavyweight bout that boasted fireworks from the first bell.

Boxing fans looked forward to another heavyweight explosion when KZN and Chatsworth local hero Marc Subramoney squared up against the heavy-handed Steve ‘Soldier’ Nwosu from Lagos, Nigeria.

Marc, who has some amateur pedigree, won hands down and became the first South African heavyweight champion of Indian descent.

General manager at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort, Myan Moodley, said that the staging of ‘Friday Fight Nights’ aligns with the resort’s strategy to provide diverse and exciting entertainment for guests and the community.

“We are confident that we can position the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort as KZN’s fight hub,” Mr Moodley explained.
