Golfers play for charity
Pro Deo cares for sick elderly people who cannot afford medical care.
THE annual Pro Deo golf day, held at Margate Country Club last Saturday, raised R40 00, funds which will be used by the care group to help elderly people on the coast who cannot afford medical care.
The organisers thanked everyone involved in the event, especially the sponsors, the golfers and the Lord above for the good weather.
Chairman of the Pro Deo group, Eloise van Niekerk said that with the deterioration in medical care and pension funds, home care as an organised activity has become a necessity.
“Unfortunately funds are limited and it is only dedicated people, such as our caring golfers, who make it possible for the volunteers to supply the necessary care that the elderly and sick require.”
Claiming first prize on a day where scoring was a little more difficult than it seemed were Rob Weyer and Mike Lee on 46 points.
Johan Wentzel and Riaan Croucamp were next on 45 points, followed by Colin Iddon and Ulrich Gous on 44 points, as well as Johan Neethling and Jaco van der Wal.
There were five pairs on 43 points, namely Hans Beilhartz and Dave Reynolds, George Bowie and JP Pretorius, Mot Moleele and Robert Mavundla, Alan Davies and Arthur Ehlert, and Sandi Johnston and Lexley Lewis.
Rounding out the top 10 were Dolf Willemse and Graeme Massam on 42 points.
Nearest the pins were Riaan Croucamp (2nd), Robert Mavundla (4th), Elvis Khawula (8th), Thys van den Hoven (11th) and Colin Iddon (16th).

Longest drive (17th) was Winstance Msezane.
The previous Tuesday’s women’s comp was won by Wondra Bothma on 39 points on a countout from Lesley Erasmus.
In third was Jane Davies on 36 points.
The Wobblers’ alliance was won by Otto Mutschler, Alan Davies and Dave Boyd on 90 points.
In second place on 88 points were Rob Brien, Derek Egerton and Cyril Greensmith, followed by Dave Morrison, Frank Merrill and Thys Bothma on 85 points.
Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Konnie Konrad, Henry Truter and Dave Parsons on 75 points.
Thursday’s comp was rained out.
Friday’s business day saw Robert Mavundla, Vusi Maphumulo, Wonderboy Nxumalo and Mot Moleele win on 101 points.
Six points adrift were Dries Barkhuizen, Johan Erasmus, George Bowie and JP Pretorius.
Another five shots off the pace were Elize Pretorius, Frank Merrill, Rob McGill and Piet Pretorius.
Nearest the pins were Rob Weyer (11th) and Dries Barkhuizen (16th).
