Major 8-ball pool competition comes to South Coast
The South African 8-ball Pool Championship will be held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre this year.
COMPETITIVE 8-ball pool, played throughout South Africa, has grown in KZN over the last few years and the province is strong in this code of sport, with a growing membership of 240 players.
Pool Billiards South Africa was established over 30 years ago and has hosted all 8-ball tournaments in South Africa, as well as international events.
KZN 8-Ball Pool Federation president Keegan Reddy said that, for the last few years, they have been trying very hard to produce good results to be amongst the great names in pool history.
“I must say that it was a learning experience for all our players, as the standard of pool in championships is very high. Last year brought a big change in the KZN committee and we perfected our team formula and stamped our positivity on our selected KZN players for all different events,” he explained.
He pointed out that 2016 had been an eye-opener for our province because the federation set high goals and a pool committee led with passion and positivity.
Chosen KZN players were determined to go to the nationals and not come back empty handed.
During the year of competitive pool, KZN achieved amazing results. Women finished third in the country, seniors fourth, opens-B-Division second, while two players were chosen to represent SA in Blackpool, England and two players achieved individual awards for best performances.

“This was our pool career’s best performance all round. The management of KZN 8-Ball Pool Federation announced the best news of all times, that of winning the bid to host the National Tournaments for 2017 in KZN, with the option to extend for another two years until 2019,” said Keegan.
The South African 8-ball Pool Championship will be held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre later this month.
The women’s event runs from April 23 to 28. The wheelchair event is on April 29. The masters/seniors’ event is from April 30 to May 6 and the juniors and opens will be played in October.
“To have an event of this magnitude shows how pool is growing in our province. KZN 8-Ball Pool Federation would like to praise the Ugu District for always supporting the KZN teams with sponsorships.”
