Hook, line and sinker: Guitarfish catch the highlight in a quiet week
Fishermen have had to be very patient this week, as fishing has been slow.
OCKERT Schonken of Shelly Beach took about 40 minutes to land a giant guitarfish (also known as a sandshark), estimated to have weighed about 120kg at Orange Rocks near Uvongo recently.
After a quick photo it was safely released.
Otherwise, fishing this past week has not been too productive as the number of fish and quality has been decreased.
Cooler weather is (supposedly) approaching now and the summer fish are starting to filter out as the winter fish are slowly but surely arriving.
Sea has been rough with big swells; as a result the heavy seas have made fishing difficult.
Stiebel Rocks produced a few small hammers last week. A big bull dorado was lost on a mackerel head, just as the angler was about to land it.

Between Stiebel and Umtentweni plenty decent bream have been caught .
Sandspit in Port Shepstone is still producing some nice grunter and a few cob at night on the right tide.
From Sheppie to St Mike’s it’s still mainly bream and shad around, plus a few decent hounds and lessers off the points.
From St Mike’s to Splash Rock in Port Edward, it’s a similar story … mainly bream.
In terms of deep sea fishing, there were a few tuna around but nothing to talk about regarding bottom fishing.
