Port Shepstone ‘Call of Duty’ for E-Sports gamers
Something new and rather interesting took place in Port Shepstone last Saturday.
THE South Coast town of Port Shepstone was in the spotlight last Saturday when it hosted the first ever Gaming Entertainment Championships (GEC) Call of Duty (COD) tournament at the Port Shepstone Islamic School.
The first ever GEC was initiated in KwaZulu-Natal by three friends who share a love for Call of Duty and gaming as a whole.
Yusuf Moosa, Mohsin Bhana and Abdullah Mahomedy chose the Islamic school as an ideal venue to kick off their first ever GEC tournament, which falls into the realm of electronic sports (E-Sports).
Organisers noticed the lack of COD tournaments in South Africa, particularly within KZN.
The lack of these tournaments created an opportunity to bring the COD gaming community together again in the form of a COD land area network (LAN) tournament.
GEC creates an ideal opportunity for people of all age groups and walks of life to show off their gaming skills and also enhances being competitive in an atmosphere that requires a high level of skill and focus.
This tournament was also the first one held in KZN and the first LAN hosted on the game Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in South Africa.
Mohsin and Abdullah said that the reason for initiating this tournament was to keep teenagers and youngsters like themselves from doing things that could harm them and be detrimental to themselves.
“By this we mean that GEC keeps us off the streets and away from drugs and idleness.”
Despite a few minor hitches, the tournament did eventually take place and the three friends hope it will be the springboard to more, bigger, successful events in the future, with an eye to definitely return to Port Shepstone.

They thanked the board of governors and the staff of the Islamic School, who assisted them in realising this dream.
The winning team was Team Envy 2.0 comprising Mohamed, Jared, Max and George.
