Sprint finish for Michael Mzobe at Hibiscus Challenge

More than 750 runners and walkers took part in the Hibiscus Coast Challenge.

ATHLETES from as far afield as Kenya, Gauteng, Kokstad and Richads Bay took part in the third hosting of the Hibiscus Coast Challenge on Monday this week.

Highlight of the day was the win produced in the 25km section by Michael Mzobe of South Coast Striders.

But he had to work hard for it and a sprint finish to the line took place against Mahlomula Sekhonyana (Hillcrest) with the local runner doing just enough.

Organised by the South Coast Striders Athletics Club and presented by Ugu South Coast Tourism and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, the event started and finished at the Ugu Sports and Leisure centre and consisted of a 50km, 25km and 10km run and walk.

Skhumbuzo Dlamini (Maxed Elite Athletics Club) won the main race in 3:08. It was close though, with Morapella Mosoeunyane (Hollywood Bets AC) only one minute behind.

Champion: Skhumbuzo Dlamini from Maxed Elite Club won the 50km event in a time of 3.08.

Precious Duma (Nedbank AC) won the women’s race in 4:18.

In the 25km junior race, Striders runner Sarah Morrison-Young was the champion.

The challenge saw a large number of entrants over all three distances, in total 760 participants, with 290 competing in the 50km event.

Kim Jones of the South Coast Striders said that the general comments were very positive and that the event was fast becoming a favourite for many.

“The 50km course was very tough. This can be verified by those that took part and went on to complete the course in the required comrades qualifying time of six hours,” said Kim.

The weather played its part and the challenge would not have been the success if it was not for the hundreds of volunteers and sponsors.

Thumbs up: Michael Mzobe of South Coast Striders was the winner of the 25km category in a time of 1.23.47.
