Liam looks ahead to next challenge
Garrick are also making their way down the coast and some decent ones have been caught and released.
LIAM van der Merwe, a local fly fisherman from Umtentweni, is preparing for his next trials and inter-provincials to be held in Douglas in October.
During a recent practice session on the Mzimkhulu River, he caught some Natal yellows, or scaly, as they are more commonly known.
Liam is inviting all junior and senior fly fishing anglers to join him at the next club meeting to be held at the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club on June 29.

The meeting starts at 6.30pm with a bring and braai afterwards, where all the fishing stories are told.
His parents, Pieter and Alison van der Merwe of Umtentweni, thanked all those who had helped sponsor Liam’s recent trip to the Czech Republic.
These include Lucky’s Port Shepstone and Lucky’s Manaba, Falcodor Real Estate, Alan Date from Date farm transport, Sean Naidoo, Henry’s Diesel, Dr Oupa Habbib and family, and the South Coast Fly Anglers.
In other fishing, the weather has improved and fishing has started picking up, especially for edibles.
With the calming of the sea, more and more anglers have started fishing again with hopes to land an early Garrick or shad.
Some decent shad have been caught between Stiebel Rocks in the north and Splash Rock in Port Edward.
Garrick are also making their way down the coast and some decent ones have been caught and released.
Well done to anglers that release these awesome fish for another angler to tussle.
There are reports of a couple of small kob having been caught.
Further down south, anglers are catching a lot of kob at the Port St John’s river mouth.
Deep sea
Shelly Beach to Port Edward has also been a bit of a hot spot with very good reports of big tuna being landed in the deeper water on big live baits as well a few hook ups of sailfish.
The couta are not in abundance any more but there have been a few big ones coming out nonetheless.
The Shelly Beach Ski-boat Festival will be taking place from July 11-15.
Weigh-ins from 3pm to 5pm from Wednesday to Saturday. Prize-giving on Saturday at 7pm.
