WHEN it comes to staying fit and paddling the coast’s waves, there aren’t many more committed than Mike Halliday (67) of Southbroom.
He’s always been fiercely competitive and passionate about his sport.

Although the years have rolled on, he is still supremely fit and last weekend won the South African Surf Ski Championships in his age group in Durban.
He was very pleased with his efforts and, in particular, enjoyed taking on the elements.
It was raced from from La Mercy to Marine. “The surf was huge, between six and eight feet,” he said.
Of the 80-odd competitors, nearly 20 didn’t even get out, with most breaking boats in the launching process.
Overall he enjoyed the event. “We had a nice north-easterly blowing on our backs,” he said.
While Mike is nudging 70, you’d never really say so. He still paddles up to five times a week, between Southbroom and Port Edward.
“I like to keep fit, keeps me young, you know how it is,” he said.
