Ebbo Bastard Trophy within grasp
The players are looking forward to the big game at Growthpoint King's Park this Saturday.
IF you thought the Springboks (Rooiboks?) win over Los Pumas in Argentina last Saturday was a messy, bruising affair, then the Ebbo Bastard Sub-Union Trophy rugby game between Southern KZN and Zululand made this look a little tame.
The match was played in Zululand and won by Southern KZN 38-33, but that doesn’t begin to tell the whole story.

Southern KZN was forced to play with 13 men for the last 20 minutes of the game. There was a yellow card and then some players got injured.
The team’s bench was stretched to the limit after various players came off with injury. It resembled a hospital casualty ward of sorts.
Those who needed treatment were scrumhalf Chris Mitchell (shoulder), fullback Marcus Botha (broken finger), wing Tiaan Gericke (wrist), Sbu Mkhize (ankle) and wing Ross Bartlett (concussion).
To make matters even more challenging it came shortly after most of the subs had been used.
Unfortunately Mitchell is out for the season and will be seeing the doctor today (31st) to see if he needs surgery.
He was in good spirits though and vowed to try and be ready for next season.
With Northern KZN – perhaps surprisingly – losing to Durban RSU last Saturday, it means all Southern KZN need to do is win against Northern KZN at Growthpoint King’s Park this Saturday and the Ebbo Bastard Trophy will be theirs.
In other words, they don’t need bonus points, or to rely on the outcome of other games.
It remains to be seen who will be fit enough to play.
The match will serve as the curtain-raiser to the Currie Cup game between the Sharks and Cheetahs.
In other rugby news, the South Coast Warriors Rugby Club will have nine juniors playing in various KwaZulu-Natal Duiker teams at an upcoming interprovincial tournament to be held in Pretoria and hosted by the Blue Bulls from October 2 to 7 this year.

The players are Byron Winrow, Shayn Assam, Brandon Coleman, Brendon Smit, Thinus Bester, Martin Fourie, Tiaan Henderson, Bradley Botha and Otto Botha.
Positions and teams are as follows: Otto Botha (fullback U18), Tiaan Henderson (hooker U16), Bradley Botha (centre/fullback U16), Thinus Bester (scrumhalf U15), Brandon Coleman (flyhalf U15), Martin Fourie (centre U15), Brendon Smit (wing), Shayn Assam (flank U14), Byron Winrow (wing/fullback U13).
An information evening was held at Westville Old Boys Rugby Club recently, where the boys attended with their parents.
The Warriors lanched its junior sections three years ago and has seen a number of youngsters develop their talent.
