Volleyball legends made a welcome return
This time around it was 'Falcons' which took top honours.
SEVERAL legends of local volleyball, namely Ivan Naidoo, Tigs Manisunker, Ian Rajgopal and Collin Reddiar made a welcome return to the volleyball courts, without much training, for the Port Shepstone Volleyball Association’s (PSVA) second volleyball KO tournament at the Marburg volleyball complex last Saturday.

Social volleyball tournament convener, Jason Govender, must be credited for reviving the game, as volleyball needed these personalities to inspire the youth back into the game.
A total of 15 teams took part in this tournament. The non-competitive section, which catered for those who are learning the game and the older folk, was once again the focus of intense interest. The youngest team was ‘Super Kids’ whose game has improved tremendously!
Due to the large number of team entries, this section was divided into two groups. Group B had ‘NRTS,’ (an under-15 school team), who were unbeaten in the round robin stages, and ‘Family VC’ finishing first and second, going into the semis. Group A was a more tightly contested group with, ‘Assassins’ and ‘Rising Stars,’ a mixed team that included, women and under-12s) finishing first and second. The crossover semi-final KO stages saw ‘Assassins’ beating ‘Family VC’ convincingly and ‘Rising Stars’ beating ‘NRTS.’
The final was an exciting and very tightly contested game, going into the third set with ‘Rising Stars’ edging ‘Assassins,’ 15-13. The highly competitive premier section had six teams divided into two groups. It was good to see ‘Mzamo’ and ‘Mtwalume’ back and ‘Outsiders’, which included volleyball legends Desmond (Sid) Pillay, Wallace Daniels and Subramoney Reddiar, making a comeback.
Group A saw ‘Falcons’ men and ‘Mtwalume’ finishing first and second with ‘Outsiders’ just losing out. Group B was more tightly contested with all three teams losing one game. After taking the sets quotient into account, ‘PSVC’ and ‘City Boys’ edged ‘Falcons VC’. The semi-finals saw ‘Falcons’ men ease past ‘City Boys’, with the second being a very tight game going into the third set, with ‘PSVC’ edging ‘Mtwalume,’ 16-14.
The centre court premier final between ‘PSVC’ and ‘Falcons’ was another exhilarating and pulsating game with their boisterous supporters urging their teams on. The first set went to ‘PSVC’ with ‘Falcons’ men taking the second. The third saw ‘Falcons’ men keeping their cool heads and winning it narrowly.
The PSVA thanks all teams which took part and those players that stayed late into the night to assist with umpiring. The third volleyball KO will be announced soon. Watch the press for details. The PSVA volleyball league is played on Tuesdays and Thursdays and is going well.
