Herald Fishing: Shad on the bite in a big way
Fishing is picking up nicely ahead of the summer season.
Anglers have been catching shad all along the coast this past week.
Popular spots have included Hibberdene main beach, Stiebel Rocks in Pumula, Sunwich Port, Sea Park, The Block and Sandspit in Port Shepstone, Orange Rocks in Uvongo, Uvongo Pier and Margate Pier.

Some big shad have come out in the early mornings, so get out there and cast a bait. The coast has produced some nice kob, too, as well as other edibles.
A few late season garrick have come out among the bigger shad. These have been favouring live bait.
Bronze bream are still on the bite and a lot have been caught between Ramsgate and Trafalgar.
Anglers fishing in Trafalgar have had fun with the edibles such as brusher, rock cod and bream.
There have been reports of a number of inedibles being caught and released.
Plenty of diamond and brown skates around and angler can target these rays early in the mornings with either mackerel, red eye or chokka bait.
This is a great time of year for the bass.
They are feeding with extra vigour and aggressively attacking most of the bigger baits or topwaters.
The past week has not held the best of weather but that hasn’t stopped many of the anglers from trying.
Those who did brave the weather were rewarded quite nicely with decent specimens of bass from the bank as well as the boat.
Early morning top water has also sparked some action in the shallower water.
Most of the bass coming out on top water in the shallower water are rather small in comparison to the bass being caught on jigs.
