Heat fails to deter most players at Umkomaas GC

UMKOMAAS Golf Club hosted the industrial league last Saturday. As always it’s a pleasure to see the golf course looking so stunning after the recent sprinkling of rain and the car park full! All the players thoroughly enjoyed the greens, which had been cut to perfection!

It was the normal individual Stableford last Wednesday and it was Wally Kent, on a count-out from Dave Kemp, in first place, both players on 38 points. Taking third slot was Peter Bond with 37 points.

Last Saturday’s 4BBB Stableford competition was not as well attended as is the norm on a Saturday, but considering that quite a few of our members played in the industrial league earlier that morning, it was certainly too hot to play another 18 holes, even if they were permitted to do so! The winning pair were Eric Morsner and Simon van den Bosch on 44 points followed Keith Vergottini and Peter Toward, only one shot behind.

The jackpot went a-begging, as did the hidden birdie on the eighth hole – so these comps will be carried over to next weekend. Even the two-club had no winners this week. Both Sean Prendergast and Barrie Taylor had two-clubs on the fourth hole but didn’t take the bet! The only prize won was the attendance draw – that was by Bryony Rogers.

The ever-popular ‘Sunday Bash’ did not attract as many players as usual last Sunday but the competition was just as fierce as always. Well done to the players for their loyal support. The next outing for the ‘bash’ is Sunday, February 4.

The competition this Saturday, January 27, is the fourball alliance with two scores to count. The alliance league starts in February – Sonny has the rules and regulations, so give it a whirl and read them!

KidzGolf starts up again this Saturday – coach Devlyn will be at the club to greet and welcome back all the ‘kids’ after the Christmas holidays. Coaching starts at 8am and any youngster who wishes to learn about golf, is more than welcome to come down and join in. The club has golf clubs for them to borrow, so clubs are not needed at this stage.

The ‘Early Bird Special’ – which proved to be very popular during the holidays – is still going strong on Tuedays and Fridays, only before 7.30am. If you are on your own and would like to play, do call Graham at 083-3255705 to make arrangements or call the club at 039-9731042.

It’s that time of the year where players are starting to think about entering the Sardine Run in June.

This three-day tournament has a very long tradition and has been an annual event for the past 20+ years. Umkomaas Golf Club has been involved for almost 10 of those years and has become an enormously popular event on the golfing calendar.

The organisers have tried over the years to have the tournament coincide with the actual sardine run (with the little silver fishes).
