Brian ‘burns’ his way to C division victory at Scottburgh
There has been some impressive golf of late.
THE sun is really taking its toll on the course. I’ve never seen fairways so brown since I was a ‘Vaalie’ – time to call in the sangomas to throw the bones and conduct a rain dance, methinks.
If you think the sun is hot, it’s nothing compared to the clubs of Brian Richards, who is ‘burning up’ the course of late. We played an individual Stableford for all three handicap divisions last week Wednesday.

Alan Eriksen played to his handicap and shot 36 to win A division; Gerrie Meyer was just one behind to take second. John Mills had 34 points to win B division with Ewald Odendaal one adrift, winning the count-out from Kevin Riemer on 33.
As mentioned earlier, Brian Richards’s clubs did the talking as he chased away all-comers with 40 points to claim the C division, although playing partner Hans Beuthe gave him a fright by being just two behind to claim second spot. Anybody seen the hidden holes – they’re missing – a reward is out if you can find them. There were four two-clubs – Anton Visagé had two, Gerrie Meyer and Mark had the others. Thys Swart also lifted a prize, but had to pay R10 for the pleasure.
Recycling is the in thing at the moment and as the old lady said “every little bit helps”. Well, the women did their bit on Saturday by bringing a prize of some sort, probably an old prize they won and never used. Winners of their betterball combined Stableford were Hayley Gilliver and Linda Els on 66, with Lauren Davey and Janet Beckerly on 63 and Tanith Jenkins and Desiré Norton completing the scorelines with 61 points.
They each took home a prize, which will probably be used again at the next recycling game they arrange.
P&G Construction were the generous sponsors for the men’s betterball Stableford on Saturday for which we thank them. The captain, Shaun Jenkins, and past captain Ian Walker stole the show and the whisky with 48 glorious points. John Mills and Barry Kisten (44) were second, just one ahead of Rupert Jones and Mark (no surname). Nearest the pin on the second and fifth was John Mills, captain Shaun took the 10th and Dave Sirey the 13th with Dave Meredith and Brett Rowe taking the Stone. Only one two-club – a fantastic chip in by the captain. A search party has been arranged to look for the hidden holes and a sizeable reward awaits those finding them. Once again thanks to P&G for their continued sponsorship.
Last week the Riemers were back in town for a family reunion. Gerry, Kevin, Dee and Trish all got together before going up to the Berg. The family are well known in the district as dad was a family GP with rooms in Umzinto before he moved to Scottburgh.

As golfers they all supported the club. Helen was the lady president in 1967, Bob was captain in 1958/59 and again from 1966 to 1969. The ‘girls’ are featured on the honours boards with Dee as the women’s champion in 1967, Ann (Gerry’s wife) B division champion in 1971 and Trish B division champion in 1972 and 1998. The boys, although not on the boards, played all their golf at Scotties before Dr Gerry moved to Matatiele. Kevin’s claim to fame was making four two-clubs in the same round in the championships and losing by a stroke.
Gerry and Ann now reside at Goose Valley in Plett; Dee lives in Port Elizabeth; Kevin and Patty in Krugersdorp and Trish has just retired from teaching at the high school. Great to see them back and to see them remembering the old times with old friends.
Coming up on Wednesday is a threeball alliance and a betterball Stableford is the format for Saturday.
During February, the club is sponsoring a game with a chicken surprise meal afterwards and a Valentine’s lunch will also be available. Please check the noticeboard re the dates and function information.
Keep cool and cover up.
