Waves and wipe-outs for South Shore groms
There was plenty of fun and surfing action on the day.
For many surfers, past and present, the words ‘South Shore Surf Club’ have a special meaning.
In the ’80s and ’90s the club was a force to be reckoned with when surfing was a lot stronger.
The region produced some world-class surfers and there was a great atmosphere, a brotherhood, a lifestyle. Surfers call it ‘stoke’.
That crowd grew up, got jobs, cut the flowing hair, and moved away… and the club eventually closed.
But things go in cycles and now the club is now enjoying a revival of sorts.
There are a lot of people to thank for this, including Ugu District Municipality, which has done its bit to promote the sport in general on the coast.
Then there are the parents of the youngsters surfing, with Theo Peyios one of them, and now the chairman of South Shore.

His son Evan is one of the promising youngsters coming through the ranks. There are others, like Jordan Boshoff, Evan Spittal, Jesse Powell and Mayah Potgieter, to mention only a few.
Professional surfer Royden Bryson, who is originally from East London but now works on the coast, spent some time with a large group of groms at Ski-boat Bay in Ramsgate last week Saturday.
He was joined by Rene Terblanche and they gave some coaching to the groms and newbies.
“We are all inspired to keep the clinics going and have a clear vision for the surf club. Special thanks to Rene and Royden for climbing in and helping the beginners feel the stoke of riding a wave. A few stood for the very first time,” said Theo.
“We all look forward to growing the club with the support of the locals and local businesses and aim to provide a safe environment for youngsters to learn to surf, to learn ocean awareness and above all, have fun.”
* The Ugu Surfriders champs will take place at Scottburgh beach on Saturday, February 3.
There will also be a first trial towards SA champs team selection on Sunday, February 4.
