WATCH: Huge prize for big wave surfer Derek Horlock
The popular young surfer will soon test his skills in Hawaii.
Surfer Derek Horlock of Umtentweni scooped one of the biggest awards in the surfing calendar when he took first prize in the Striped Horse Challenge last Friday.
The competition, sponsored by Striped Horse and surfboard manufacturer Hurricane, was presented by surfing magazine Zig Zag.
It involved surfing a wave over six foot anywhere in Southern Africa from Namibia to Mozambique.

The ride had to be videoed and an expert panel of judges decided on a monthly winner.
Five monthly finalists were invited to the award ceremony in Cape Town.

The overall winning wave was judged to be Derek’s.
Derek, who is a sports coordinator and sports teacher at Creston College, won a cash prize of R30 000 plus another R30 000 of surfing gear from Hurricane.
To top it off all he gets return flights to Hawaii for a surfing holiday of a lifetime.
His dad, Pete Horlock, also secured a prize for videoing the ride.
