Charles Hulley produces a stunner at Port Shepstone CC
There has been some sensational scoring at the club of late.
Charles Hulley produced one of the rounds of his life to win the monthly medal overall at Port Shepstone Country Club last week Saturday.
Paul Geoffery posted a nett 63 off his nine handicap and, like Ernie in the Tiger era, could have been forgiven for thinking he’d done enough to win.
Not so, as Charlie blitzed around in 79 strokes off his 17 handicap, to clinch the win on nett 62.
(Is it a coincidence that Woods’s son is named Charlie?)
There were signs the previous Wednesday that Charles was picking up speed, when he carded 38 points to finish in third behind Kevin Loring on 41 points and Leon Reeders on 40 points.
But still, Saturday’s game was something special. It’s one thing to do it in an alliance, or Stableford, but medal … wow.
“It came from nowhere really, my normal scores are around the 90 mark. Haven’t had a round like that for about 30 years,” he said.
The secret to his success was some exceptional short game play. “I got up-and-down seven times, three of those from bunkers.”
There was some consolation for Paul as he had the best gross on the day, level par 72.
A division honours went to Paul on nett 63, with Jarrod van Wyk next on nett 68, followed by Kirk Larson on nett 70.

In the B division, Yugs Naidoo was the winner on nett 64, with Ian Stewart and Ryan Ringo next on nett 69.
Thys Blom won the C division on nett 65, five ahead of Basil King on nett and Hendrik van Rensburg on nett 71.
In the Stableford section last Saturday, Dick Wheelwright was the winner on 39 points with Jenny Hulley, arguably the golfer with best swing in the Hulley family, second on 34 points.
