Midlands ‘meander’ goes off track for Southern KZN golfers
There's a quick turn-around ahead of the next game and the team will need to find form quickly.
It wasn’t the greatest of starts for the Southern KwaZulu-Natal golf team playing in the A division of the KZN Golf Union’s league this year.
Having been relegated last year, they were hoping for a good start, but playing away to Midlands at Howick Golf Club was always going to be a tricky fixture.
In the end, the team lost 8-4. The foursomes, however, had provided some reason to believe, and were halved 2-2.
Sbu Ntozakhe and Douglas Sima, both from Margate CC, lost 4/2 to Bruce Johnston and Johan Viljoen.

But new pairing Robert Mavundla (Margate CC) and Jean-Marc Bouic (Port Shepstone CC), the latter on debut, levelled matters by beating Piet Ferreira and Radley Jackson 2-up.
Unfortunately, Elvis Khawula (Margate CC) and Mikhail van Brakel (Umdoni Park) went down to André Ferreira and Izak Hanekom 2/1.
All was not (yet) lost as Jason Gilliver (Selborne Park) and Graham Fabricius (Port Shepstone CC) squared things up by beating Kes Hansen and Doug Barclay 5/4.
The singles were a bit of a disaster for Southerns, with players eight to three all losing.
Only Fabricius and Gilliver were able to avoid a whitewash in the afternoon.
SINGLES RESULTS
Ntozakhe lost 7/5 to Jackson.
Sima lost 5/4 to Viljoen.
Jean-Marc Bouic lost 3/1 to Johnston.
Van Brakel lost 3/1 to Piet Ferreira.
Khawula lost 3/1 to Hanekom.
Mavundla lost 4/3 to André Ferreira.
Fabricius beat Barclay 7/6.
Gilliver beat Hansen 1-up.
Next game is against Bluff National Park at Bluff on March 4.
This will be followed by the third game, against Mount Edgecombe Country Club ‘2’ at home, with the venue being Southbroom Golf Club.
Unfortunately, this match clashes with Margate Country Club’s strokeplay championships, so selection could be interesting.
Despite the loss, there’s still reason to be optimistic as this year the format is home-and-away, so there’s potential to avenge the loss later in the season.
