Play an ace to win the whisky at Scottburgh Golf Club

A hole-in-one is a very special feat by any stretch of the imagination and referred to as the perfect fluke.

To commemorate this feat Bells whisky have kindly sponsored a year’s supply, one bottle every month, to any golfer achieving this feat on the short 10th hole.

It doesn’t matter when you do it, as long as you have a marker and players to verify the stroke.

A photo of the score card and of yourself on the tee will be needed and it will also appear in this column, so get that distance right and “give that man a Bells”.

Wednesday’s betterball Stableford at Scottburgh Golf Club was won by that formidable pairing of Barry Kisten and John Mills with a balanced score of 23 on each nine holes totalling 46 points.

Geoff Thommasen and Mick Marriot counted out Roly Tickle and Mike Eley (Swansea 8, Notts County 1) both on 43 to take second spot.

John also found the hidden holes and, in the last minute of extra time, he chose the right number and picked up the meat draw to record a hat-trick.

There were no two-clubs and Dave Sirey along with the ‘Major’ paid the obligatory fine towards the upkeep of the Stone.

The seven-pin on Friday has reverted back to a nine-hole competition and it will still be sponsored by Bob and Linda Hall. The menu for Friday night’s supper is always on the notice board. Better still, it’s also on the bar and, while you have a drink, you can decide what to order beforehand.

On Saturday the women played their annual captain versus vice-captain challenge with the players split into two equal teams. Winning the individual prize for the captain’s team was Janet Beckerly with 38 points and Linda Hall led her team by example to win the vice-captain’s individual prize with 34 points.

Overall the captain’s team – led by Mandy Jones – narrowly beat the vice-captain’s team by just three points 131-128.

The men played a betterball bonus bogey and Quinton Richardson and Marius Odendaal came home with +9 to pip Thys Swart and John Mills by one on +8. Third spot went to Francois Rosseau and Gary Jones on +6, which was also their half-time score, maybe they had too much to eat at halfway.

Brian Richards had the only two-club and the ‘Major’ got his revenge for Wednesday by picking up the hidden holes.

Herman Grotius brought along a visitor, Willy Minnie, on Saturday and Herman showed Willy the way to the captain’s table in order to feel how heavy the Stone is and of course to pay for the privilege.

Coming up on Wednesday is a betterball medal and on Saturday the club fund-raiser. The field is filling up quite nicely so, if your name isn’t down, either get down to the club or phone in and do it that way.
