Scottburgh Primary gala champ Tyne a hero
Tyne's father, Mark, took him to the Scottburgh main beach recently for a quick surf session, little knowing that his son's three-year-long Nipper experience would soon pay off.
FEBRUARY might just go down as one of the best months ever in 11-year-old Tyne van Achterbergh’s books.
Not only did he place first in the under-10 division of the Ugu Surfriders Championships, also placing second in the under 12 division, but – wait for it – he also broke a 24-year-old record when he competed in the annual Scottburgh Primary School Inter-house Gala last Wednesday.
Tyne, who celebrated his 11th birthday on Monday, was awarded the under-11 best boy trophy as well as the Junior Victor Ludorum cup.

Breaking the age-old record in the individual medley, Tyne took a further four gold medals in the freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke races.
He successfully competed in an additional four relay races, taking home three more gold medals and one silver.
You would think these amazing achievements would end there, but they don’t.

It was a normal day for the avid surfer as he took off catching a wave.
Soon, however, he spotted a middle-aged woman experiencing difficulty.
Lifeguards were off-duty at the time, meaning Tyne could not signal for assistance.
He assisted the woman onto his surfboard and continued to swim towards the shore with his ankle leash still tied to him all the while monitoring the waves behind him.
They safely arrived back on dry land where the woman thanked him for coming to her rescue.
