Fund-raiser the ‘best ever’ at Scottburgh Golf Club
It wasn't the local yokels that took the honours, but the visitors referred to by captain Shaun Jenkins as the Umko Raiders.
FIRST of all… let me correct the Bells hole-in-one challenge report of last week. The challenge is only open on committee-sanctioned competition days – normally Wednesday and Saturday and then any competition the committee sanctions. Sorry about that to all those who have been practising their 100 to 120 metre shots; never mind, I’m sure it will come in useful somewhere.
Nobody got near on Wednesday but everybody was trying during the betterball medal competition. The previous Wednesday Dave Sirey (Spud) and Anton Visagé (the Major) ingloriously picked up the Stone; this week they turned the tables on everyone and won hands down with a score of 64 to take the honours.

Regular pair Graham Brown and Brian Richards nipped in for second with 66 and Roly Tickle and Geoff ‘the Chef’ Thommasen claimed third with 67. Both the hidden holes and two-clubs were resting, getting prepared for Saturday’s big one.
Friday’s chicken run was won by Gary Jones with 19 points, this competition having now reverted to a nine-hole game.
The ‘big one’ arrived last Saturday with the skies looking ominous but, as the first players teed off, the clouds lifted and the sun came out and we knew we were in for a great afternoon’s golf. However, it wasn’t the local yokels that took the honours, but the visitors referred to by captain Shaun Jenkins as the Umko Raiders.
The team – led by Bing Opie and consisting of Graham, Keith and Lisa – won on 90 points, five points ahead of Quinton Richardson, Dave Sirey, Anton Visagé and Flinky Dreyer on 85. Captain Shaun Jenkins, brother Rocky, Mick Marriot and Sean were third with 84, winning the count-out from Tony Moore, Graham Pawley, Tony Power and D Swanepoel.
Pete Gilliver took nearest-the-pin on the second, Richard Delvan on the fifth, Thys Swart on the 10th, John Mills on the 13th and captain Shaun on the 17th.
The hidden holes were found by Janet Eckerly, Hans Beuthe and Graham Pawley with two-clubs recorded by Richard Delvan and Flinky all donating their winnings back to the ‘fund’. There were a host of members who donated prizes towards the day, none more than Dave Meredith who donated four bottles of excellent wine for the lifters of the Stone.

Dave is no slouch when it comes to competing for this honour and so it was as he led his team of Ian Walker, Clyde Liesegang and Gerrie Odendaal forwards to receive their prize with a R20 note in their hands.
All in all with donations, supper and golf fees, we managed to raise in the region of R50 000. The captain thanked all who had contributed in making the day the success that it was.
During the week, two of our members took ownership of a project to clean out the irrigation pump station and the filters which had become blocked. It was a gruesome task by all accounts and would not have been finished without the help of Bruce Ellis of Rent-a-Tool in Prospecton who lent the club a slurry and high pressure water pump at no charge.
A betterball Stableford comes up on Wednesday and the chicken run on Friday with P&G Construction being the sponsors for Saturday’s game.
