Jono Broomhead sweeps into winner’s circle at KZN Invitational
There've been many brothers playing golf at a high level but there can't be too many who've both won big events while still at school.
Jono Broomhead of Durban Country Club won the KZN Invitational at Victoria Country Club last Sunday.
He follows in the footsteps of his older brother Jason who won this tournament at Mount Edgecombe CC in 2015.
Unfortunately it clashed with the first round of qualifying at the South African Amateur (matchplay) which is currently on the go at Durban CC.
So, it meant that most of the big names were not there, but Broomhead has been knocking on the door for a while and to see him win is no surprise to those who follow his golf.
He needed a play-off to get it done, though, triumphing over mid-amateur Graham Dickinson of Maritzburg Golf Club.
Both scored level par 142 for the day, with Broomhead taking the title on the first extra hole.
He’s at Westville Boys’ High, in matric, and is pretty happy that he was able to win in his matric year, like his brother did before him.
Jason Gilliver (Selborne Park) was again in contention, missing the playoff by a single shot. He also missed out on a playoff with Jason Broomhead at the Southern KZN Open at Umdoni Park last year.
“Just can’t beat the Broomheads,” he lamented, although a shanked 7-iron on the 17th didn’t help his cause.
Hometown hope Nikhil Gopal was tied for fourth with Gavin Sole (Southbroom GC) on 146.
Crowd favourite, senior Morgan Phillips (Maritzburg GC) was sixth on 148.
* Clayton Mansfield (Durban CC) broke into the top five of the country’s rankings with a win at the Sanlam Cape Province Open at Kingswood Golf Estate last week.
He was 11-under par for the tournament and won by a shot from Deon Germishuys of Western Province.
“I’m so stoked, especially coming after disappointing results in the last two weeks,” said Mansfield.
Malcolm Mitchell (Kloof CC) was third two shots behind, with Luke Mayo (Mount Edgecombe CC) in a tie for seventh a further four shots back.
* The third round of the Premier League takes place this coming Sunday.
Kloof host the fearsome Mount Edgecombe Country Club and will have to play way above themselves to win.
However, Mount Edgecombe CC cannot afford any complacency as Kloof have shown more intent this season.
Toti are at home to Durban Country Club and will have a massive battle on their hands to gain a win.
However, they’ve caused an upset or two at home and golf’s a funny old game. If Durban CC are without their stars then anything is possible.
Those are the games in the Blue Pool.
In the Red Pool Cotswold Downs host Royal Durban in what could be an intriguing game.
The hosts should win though as most visitors struggle on the slick greens.
