Southbroom champions Gavin and Heather defend titles with ease
There was a gentle breeze to make things interesting.
SHAKE the bottle and repeat the dose … that was pretty much the case at Southbroom Golf Club’s recent strokeplay championships.
Like last year, Gavin Sole and Heather Anderson won comfortably.
Gavin, who has captained the men’s provincial team for a number of years now, has won seven on the trot to make it nine overall.
He’s in a tie with Ivan Curlewis for most championship wins, although Ivan has won so many at Margate Country Club they need a calculator to work it out.
Gavin shot 69 and 68 to win by 17 shots from Malcolm Greenland who had a pair of 77s, and Kevin Murray who had 80 and 74.
Gary Purtell and Cyprian Xolo tied for fourth on 160.

In another surprising similarity to last year, perennial runner-up in years gone by, Mike Anthony, again (like Arsenal Football Club) finished out of the top four.
Not like him, but then as Manchester United fans say to Liverpool fans “there’s always next year”.
But enough about football, back to golf.
B division honours went to Jan Roos on 81 and 82, to beat last year’s winner Grant Richards, who had 80 and 89.
In the C division, the champion was again Malcolm Moorley on 71 points with Graham Sole and Chris Huber next on 67 points.
Heather has played for the Scottish senior women’s team and is a frequent and popular visitor to Southbroom.
She scored 79 and 81 to win by 14 shots from Janet Humphrey who had 90 and then a more respectable 84, by her standards.
Lesley Godley won the Stableford on 73 points with a superb Sunday score of 41 points.
Runner-up was Anita Landolf on 67 points with third going to Regina Bosshart on 66 points.
Earlier in the week, the Wednesday competition was won by Rene Matthew on 40 points, with Heather Anderson and Janet Humphrey next on 35 points.
The men’s competition was won by Roger Hissey on 45 points with Ross McKay, Wilfred Bessell and Rob Braithwaite all on 41 points.
Chicken Run winner last Friday was Bob Clark on 21 points, followed by Malcolm Greenland on 19 points and Colin McKay and Gary Purtell on 17 points.
