Khuzwayo and Xolo clean up again at Halfway Toyota Margate Challenge
The weather was pretty good for the duration of the tournament.
It’s not easy to defend a title and this proved to be the case for Ethekweni Golf Club players Sandile Khuzwayo and Willie Xolo, who needed help from the countout at the annual Margate Challenge held at Margate Country Club and sponsored by Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach last week.
Day 1 saw Charlie Hartman and Robbie Myburgh set the pace with 50 points, closely followed by Ulric Gouws who was partnered by ‘Casper’ Pereira (real name Carlos, his pivot or ‘ghost’) as well as Vusi Maphumulo and Emmanuel Godongwana on 49 points.

Nearest the pins were Ivan Curlewis (2nd), Johan Stoltz (4th), A Taljaard (8th), Ronnie Mtshaka (11th), Sandi Johnston (16th) and Rod Bouwer (7th for two). Longest drives – Simoné Ferreira and Zuanru Coetzee.
Day 2 was moving day and boy, did the defending champs move. They blitzed around in 51 points for the round of the weekend.
Winston Msezane and Koko Zithumane (also a past winner with Sbu Ntozakhe) came into the picture with 47 points, as did Corjan Hilt and Simoné Ferriera.
Nearest the pins were Vusi Maphumulo (2nd), Dewald Jordaan (4th), Ivan Curlewis (8th), Sandi Johnston (11th), Vusi Maphumulo (16th) and Willie Xolo (7th for two). Longest drives – Simoné Ferriera and Johan Stoltz.
The final day saw a different set of daily winners but Khuzwayo and Xolo did enough to clinch the overall title.
Day 3 winners were Emmanuel Mseleku and Adriaan Lemmer on 45 points, followed on 44 points by Johan Stoltz and Dawie Stoltz, as well as Kallie Nel and Keith Duncalf.
Nearest the pins were Emmanuel Godongwana (2nd), Flip Fourie (4th), Joe Espach (8th), Una McLachlan (11th) and Johan Stoltz (16th). Longest drive – Simoné Ferriera and Sandile Khuzwayo.
Top four pairs at the end of the week were Xolo and Khuzwayo on 140 points, counting out Ulric Gouws and Carlos Pereira (pivot).
In third place on 138 points were Graeme Massam and Maureen Ogilvie, with Koko Zithumane and Winston Msezane one further adrift.
