Lady Luck favours Warriors in clash against UKZN Durban

THE Riversmead Warriors kept up their momentum from last week to beat UKZN Durban at Douglas Mitchell last Friday night.

The scoreline of 31-22 does not tell how close the match really was, with the Warriors enjoying a gigantic slice of luck towards the end.

UKZN had a chance to take the lead in the last part of the match after scoring a try to narrow the score to 24-22, but their kicker missed from in front of the posts, clanging it into the upright.

Not long afterwards, UKZN opted to tap and go from a penalty instead of kick, and knocked it on to abort their attacking move.

The Warriors breathed a huge sign of relief and then scored at the death to make absolutely sure of the win.

The half-time score had been 24-15 but UKZN came back into the match.

Make no mistake, they’re a good team and, even though the Warriors were fortuitous, it was still a good win.

“They’re a young side with players that can run for days. They could not match us for strength and fell away in contact, but they were extremely quick,” said captain Chris Mitchell.

In the second half their fitness – in comparison – got found out a bit and it was thanks to a massive defensive effort that the lead was maintained.

“It must have been a good game to watch and (thankfully) I’m absolutely certain we won’t come up against a side that can run like that again in this league,” said the skipper.

Tries were scores by Donovon Horne (2), and Rameez Allie, Dawie Durrheim and Jacques Coetzee, all one each.

Men of the match were Lourens Stapelberg (forwards) and Donovan Horne (backs).

Coach of the day was Jason Hector. The Warriors have a bye this coming weekend.
