Margate Week bowls was simply ‘Fann-tastic’
The sponsors and players made it a week to remember.
It was a fantastic week, really great. Outstanding, in fact.
That’s how one of the tournament organisers, Johnny Louch, described this year’s Dis-Chem Margate Week bowls tournament held at Margate Bowling Club, Village and Riverside.
“The weather was kind and the bowls of the highest order. Top, top class,” he said.
The men’s section was won by Eddie Fann and his team comprising Howard Frizelle, Roy Anderson and Kevin Lancaster.
They’re no strangers to the winner’s podium but needed some help this time and got across the line on points difference in the end.
There was some serious pedigree in the women’s section, with Margate BC’s Ellen Cawker joined by Colleen Picketh from Bedford View.
She bowls for South Africa and won silver and bronze medals at the recent Commonwealth Games in Australia.
It was a massive honour to have her take part in the event.
Jessica Henderson of Margate BC, who is the SA team coach and a national selector, was also in the team, as was Brenda Webb, who is Colleen’s mom and certainly no slouch on the greens.
There weren’t going to be too many teams that could stop them. May even have given the men a run for their money?
New sponsor Dis-Chem put some serious financial muscle into the tournament (R50 000), establishing it as one of the ‘must plays’ in South Africa.
Bowlers came from around the country to take part and next year could attract even more players.
One of the highlights of the week was the ‘world class’ rendition the Chip ‘n Fails gave of the song Under the Boardwalk.
