Cruise control for Claire on the longboard

She has taken to the long board like the proverbial duck to water.

CLAIRE Haskins, a pupil at Creston College, recently earned a third place finish in the girls U16 section at the South African Longboard Championships held in Lamberts Bay on the west coast.

Already a keen surfer, she switched to longboarding when her parents bought her one for Christmas, to have fun on mainly.

However, she soon found it more graceful than short boarding and everybody said it suited her style of surfing better.

So, she decided to sign up for trials for the KwaZulu-Natal team.

To her surprise she made the team.

Her experience in having previously competed in three SA junior short board champs for Ugu put her in good stead.

This was her first SA longboard champs and she enjoyed making the adjustments under pressure.

She reckons she’s found her niche now, and is looking forward to honing her skills on the long board.
