Ugu runners ‘ready’ for Comrades Marathon

There's a buzz amongst the runners at the moment, as Comrades draws nearer.

Ugu Athletics Club runners completed their longest run of the season to date last week Saturday, in preparation for the greatest and most gruelling ultra marathon on earth, the Comrades Marathon on June 10.

They ran from Marburg to Munster and back (72km in total), which may have been 12km more than they originally planned!

Eighteen runners from the club will take part in this year’s Comrades Marathon which starts in Pietermaritzburg and finishes in Durban at the Moses Mabhida stadium.

The ‘Down Run’ favours runners who hate hills but is unkind to those with weak knees.

However, experts say the so-called ‘down hill run’ is no down hill at all because there are several tough climbs, such as Botha’s Hill.

The countdown has started with runners now in the tapering phase, where reduction of mileage is a must.

It’s also a time to concentrate on nutritional foods that build strength for the big day.
