Jason Gilliver spears Zululand Open trophy

It's the fourth tournament he has won in the past eight months.

JASON Gilliver of Selborne Park produced some golf at the Zululand Open at Empangeni Country Club that someone like Phil Mickelson might be proud, or even envious, of.

Playing the last hole, with a comfortable lead, his second shot ended in a bunker. No problem. He hauled out his sandwedge and took dead aim.

The ball flew out of the sand, sailed through the air to the pin, landed straight in the hole… and then popped out!

It didn’t matter as he had done enough to win, but it was quite spectacular. He shot 71 and 71 to win by five from Phumlani Mbhele of Kilbarchan GC, who had 74 and 73.

He felt that the secret to his success had simply been hard work… and a good attitude.

In the past eight months Gilliver has won the Maritzburg Open, Northern KZN Open, Country Districts champs, and now the Zululand Open. He also had a runner-up finish at the Southern KZN Open.

He also played some great golf at the South African Country Districts tournament in Potchefstroom, especially in the singles.

One of his games was against country districts ‘legend’ Eddie Daniel, where Gilliver saw up close how good he is.

“I lost but I learnt a lot. He made me laugh the whole day and there was good banter,” he said.

* Looking ahead, there’s league action this Sunday (3rd).

In the A-division, things are very tight and still way too close to call who will end on top in the two pools.

Southern KZN hosts Midlands and will be wary after a season-opening heavy loss. But the hosts have settled nicely and should sneak this one 6,5-5,5.

The team should comprise Gavin Sole, Jason Gilliver, Graham Fabricius, Elvis Khawula, Robert Mavundla, Gary Purtell, Jarrod van Wyk and Kevin Murray.

* The KZN team didn’t have the best of results at the SA Women’s 72-hole Team Championships at Waterkloof Golf Club last week.

Jason Gilliver escapes from tree trouble during league action for Southern KZN at Southbroom GC.

The tournament was won by Gauteng North’s Danielle du Toit, Lenanda van der Walt and Larissa du Preez, while KZN’s Brittney-Fay Berger (Kloof CC), Michaela Fletcher (Maritzburg GC) and Lizzie Currie (Southbroom GC) were seventh.
