Due to Tyler’s numerous excellent achievements over the past few weeks in a number of karate events, he has been awarded his Protea colours and has been selected as part of an elite South African team to represent his country at The Youth Olympic Qualifier and Training Camp to be held in Umag, Croatia, from June 29 to July 9.

He will be attending this event with the best karateka from countries around the world. Sensei Coenie Vrey from Suid Natal Martial Arts Academy said many current and previous world champions will be part of the training team in Umag. “This is an outstanding achievement and an unbelievable experience for Tyler and we wish him everything of the best.”

The Umtentweni teenager said he was extremely honoured and proud to have been awarded his Protea colours.

“Its been many years of hard work and commitment and that has certainly paid off. The experience of competing and training with the best karateka in the world is a chance of a lifetime,” he said.

He added that he took up the sport because he wanted to continue a family tradition of doing a form of martial arts and, besides that, he enjoys the discipline of the sport.

Besides the love for karate Tyler enjoys playing cricket and hockey.
