Herald Fishing: Ski-boat festival is under way

The cold weather has resulted in a superb sardine run this year.

The last week has had more focus on the rock and surf scene than the offshore side of things.

This has mainly been due to the large number of sharks around the sards, out-competing the gamefish. Nonetheless, there have been some decent fish coming out.

The Mercury Ski-boat Fishing Festival competition, which has among the prizes two 150hp 4-stroke Mercury motors valued at over R400 000, started yesterday (Wednesday).

It ends this Saturday (7th) when weigh-in closes at 4pm. Weigh-ins are from 2pm to 5pm each day.

The road in front of the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club (Albert Meyer Drive) will be closed to traffic (except boats) till 4pm on Saturday, July 7.

All are welcome to come and watch the daily weigh-ins and Saturday night’s prize-giving, which starts at 7pm.

The sardine shoals have been full up from Port Edward all the way up to the Durban.

Although these shoals have been plagued with sharks, there have been gamefish in between them, mainly tuna and garrick, but there have been snoek, couta and prodigal son mixed into the chaos that is the sardine run.

With the large concentration of sharks around during this time of year, you will want to up your tackle.

On the edible side, garrick are around, coming out on live shad and plugs. The snoek have been coming out on spoon; some brushers have been coming out using crabs as bait. Bronze bream have been coming out on small baits.

Not many reports of shad but they will be on the bite soon.

Reports on a lot of sharks and skates caught and released.

The main points for targeting these species would be deeper points like Stiebel Rocks in Umzumbe, Sandspit and the Block in Port Shepstone, Orange Rocks in Uvongo, Margate Pier and down south at Splash Rock in Port Edward.

Tight lines and screaming reels.
