Durban CC assert league dominance to outgun Mount Edgecombe in shock result
No one was surprised that they won, but the big margin was not expected.
DURBAN Country Club, with a massive 10-2 win over defending champions Mount Edgecombe CC on July 15 look to have all but sewn up topping their pool in the KZN premier golf league this year.
They still have to play Kloof away on August 19 with Mount Edgecombe off to play Maritzburg Golf Club on the same day.

In the final, Durban CC will then in all likelihood face Cotswold Downs, a highly motivated side that beat Durban CC ‘2’ 8,5-3,5 at Beachwood last Sunday.
The winning margin at Durban CC was a bit of a shock, especially without a full strength side.
No one was surprised that they won, but the big margin was not expected.
The hosts took the foursomes 4-0.
Clive Lazarus and David Watts edged out Graeme Inggs and Reece van Straaten 2/1.
Stalwarts Keith Forde and Murray Gilson had the biggest winning margin of the morning, beating Derek Scullard and Luke van der Berg 4/3.
In the next game, James Buzzard and Sean Fenger beat Dave Brown and Siyanda Mwandla 3/2.
It was the same result in match one with Broomhead brothers Jason and Jono accounting for Dale Burraston and Greg McKay 3/2.
A defiant comeback never looked likely. There have been enough of those of late – Croatia at the World Cup and Kevin Anderson over Roger Federer at Wimbledon.
The singles was a rout as well, although Van Straaten provided some hope with a 3/2 win over Watts at number eight.
Lazarus, back playing some really good golf, swept Inggs away 6/5.
Forde went all the way down the 18th to beat Van der Berg 1-up.
Buzzard kept Brown at bay with 3/2 win and Gilson saw off Burraston by the same margin.
Fenger lost to Mwandla 3/1 in the only other bright moment for the visitors.
Jason Broomhead beat McKay 1-up and Jono Broomhead earned a prize scalp by beating Scullard 3/1.
Toti lost 6,5-5,5 to Maritzburg Golf Club.
Cotswold Downs beat Durban CC ‘2’ by a margin of 8,5 to 3,5 to top the red pool.
There is one more round to go, with Mount Edgecombe CC now needing to overcome a seven match-point deficit in order to catch Durban CC.
That means Durban CC would have to lose at Kloof which probably isn’t going to happen.
Even if they lost 8-4, Mount Edgecombe would still need to beat Golf Club 12-0, which is also unlikely.
The final will be played at a neutral venue on September 2.
In the A section, Southern KZN beat Mount Edgecombe CC ‘A’ 10-2.
Highlight of the day for the hosts was seeing 16 year old Matt Brown (son of Dave) beat the writer of this column 2/1.
While there’s no doubt Dave Brown is a very, very good golfer, Matt’s fluid swing is much easier to watch and results in a lot less earth being removed from the fairways!
Brown jr seems to have inherited his father’s steely resolve and I suspect he’ll show a rapid improvement in the not too distant future.
