Herald Fishing: Inedibles ‘going dilly’ in hot weather

Gullies and sandy beaches have been the spots to go to for the edibles, with bronze bream and kob making up the bulk of the catches.

Fishable days have definitely made up for the miserable weather with big seas limiting the number of days on the water.

Yellowtail are abundant on the coast of late and these extremely hard fighting fish are a real challenge on any gear.

Anglers targeting inedibles have found the fish ‘going dilly’ in the hot weather, with the north-easterly winds that have been blowing. These conditions usually result in prime big fish angling.

Anglers dropping baits with drones have been testing their tackle properly. This is big fish territory, so don’t go in with a knife when you need a cannon.

The coast continues to have an influx of kingfish, with giant and blacktip ‘kingies’ all along the coast.

Anglers are using well-presented squid/chokka baits and the guys fishing with artificials have been hooking these brutes.

A live shad or karanteen is also a good bet at hooking one of the larger specimens. These are very strong and dirty fighters, so do not fish too light for them.

The rest of the coast has had the usual catches. The points are fishing well for the inedibles with a few hidings being dished out.

Freshwater fishing has been going well for both the specimen and conventional carp anglers.

Bass fishing has ebbed and flowed but on most days the guys walk off with a smile rather than a frown.

All the KZN dams are fishing incredibly well. These fish are vital for the future of the bass population, so treat them well and release them as quickly as possible.

Anglers are still having a lot of fun fishing in the estuaries, with rock salmon, kingfish and perch still on the bite.
