Non-stop action at ‘Summer Sevens’ rugby

The fan experience at the event was as lively and colourful as ever.

Rugby sevens, originally known as seven-a-side rugby consists of teams made up of seven players playing seven-minute halves, instead of the usual 15 players playing 40-minute halves. Sevens is one of the most well-distributed forms of rugby, is popular with amateur and club tournaments and normally held in the summer months.

Locally the South Coast Warrior’s Rugby Club hosted its popular ‘Summer Sevens’, sponsored by Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach, at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground last Saturday.

Club chairman Niko Potgieter said the fans at the event had been as lively and colourful as ever, with attendance levels peaking. “This growth in numbers owes not only to the feast of games on the pitch but also to the culture of it, as fan entertainment has long been a staple of sevens,” noted Mr Potgieter.

He added that the event was a thrill ride of non-stop action, with teams from across the country delivering breathtaking feats of athleticism.

“As a spectator, it was literally hard to look away, since every play was potentially explosive!”

The winners were the All Stars 7s from Pretoria. At the prize-giving ceremony, team players echoed the similar sentiment that it was a phenomenal effort to play in the sevens finals and they will definitely be back next year.
