Indoor cricket rolls out red carpet

A number of players with national colours will be in action.

South Coast Indoor Sports Arena officially opens its doors with a fun ‘Super 8’ indoor cricket tournament at the premises in Izotsha this Saturday (16th).

There’ll be cricket all day, with juniors starting from 9am, followed by women’s games, and then finally the men from around 2pm, depending on the number of teams.

The arena is the brainchild of Theo Nicholls, Jacques Cilliers and Andrew Curlewis, who is well known for his prowess as a golf pro campaigning on the Sunshine Tour.

However, ‘Curly’ also loves cricket and has taken the opportunity to get involved.

So much so that he’s roped in fellow pro Colin Nel for his team this Saturday.

There’s still time to enter a team. And even if you don’t feel like playing, come and watch and enjoy the festivities.

A number of players with national colours will be in action.

These include Ashley Lombard, who will be playing for South Africa in the Indoor Masters World Series in Cape Town later in the year.

Other notables include Theo Nicholls, Craig Roux and George Nagel.

Ashley Lombard has had a busy season in both outdoor and indoor cricket.

Ashley has worked really hard on his game and has travelled to Johannesburg every now and then to train with the SA team.

He’s skiddy-quick but batting is his major strength.

Theo is regarded as one of the quicker bowlers around, a nightmare to face when he comes around the wicket.

Craig Roux is a solid all-rounder, but brilliant when it comes to fielding.

Another player to watch could be Charl Cilliers, Jacques’s twin brother.

“He’s coming out of retirement and is going to moan when he finds out how many games he needs to play. I’ve told him to start stretching now,” he laughed.

While the format for regular indoor cricket is eight a team, 32 overs in total, Saturday’s games will be four a side, and only eight overs per game.

There are two courts at the arena, separated by the bar and big screen TV area.

Bring the youngsters too, as there’s a kids’ area and play zone.

The pitch is laid out in a red carpet. “We just wanted to be a little bit different,” said Jacques, who is also the arena manager.

Specs for the court are 4.2m high, 30m long and 11m wide.

The plan going forward is to have men’s, women’s, mixed and business leagues during the week, and a school league on Fridays, plus netball.

“It’s a great opportunity to get involved and get fit,” said Jacques.
